Last Saturday I had the pleasure of a Google plus presentation Google plus specialist Daniël Mulder to attend, organized by #Cafe0222 (thanks to Duncan Whyte and Dave Huizinga). If you want to do more with Google Plus, I definitely recommend another presentation or workshop from Daniël. In this blog I want the options Google plus for SEO (search engine optimization). Because that was the most mentioned reason why the participants in the presentation are active on Google Plus.
Google Plus as a social layer
Google plus can be compared to Facebook. But then fewer people are active on it. To keep in touch exclusively with as many friends and family members as possible, Facebook is really enough. And it will remain that way for the time being. Google Plus, the name says it all, will be added. It is added as an extra social network, but also as a social layer among the other Google products: Google search, Google Drive, Gmail, Youtube, Adwords, Translate, Places, Maps ... etc. So you can directly send a group of people out of Gmail. mail your Google Plus circle, you can share and become Google Drive files with your Google plus contacts Google Plus posts and communities shown as results in Google Search.
Google Plus communities in Google Search
SEO Netherlands is a very active community on Google Plus about search engine optimization. Manager Ronald Lever reports a steady rise in the page as a search result on the 'SEO Netherlands' search. Now it's not a question of creating a community "compare car insurance" and wait for more Google traffic; it is a result of, among other things, the credibility of the members (Google authorship), the quality of the content and the mutual interaction.
For Google Search, interaction on Google Plus is increasingly important to determine what is interesting. And so rank higher in Google. In his presentation to the Texel public, Daniël strongly recommended that a tourism community be left over Texel to start, with sections such as Events, Restaurants and Activities, in which Texel entrepreneurs as a member of the community share their (interactive and relevant) content.
Google Plusjes in Google Search
The plusje is the like from Google. You give it to a post or page. If someone in your Google Plus friends list has plied a page, you will see it in Google Search. And that page ranks higher in Google Search when your search results are personalized. So: if your website has received a plus from someone with 12,000 friends on Google Plus, those 12,000 friends will see that plus when they do a relevant search on Google Search.
An example with a search on “online marketing Den Helder“, With a personalized search result and a non-personalized search result (via a proxy server):
What stands out with a personalized search result?
- The search results are different; my own website is on 1 and 2 because I visit it very often. (read more about personalized search results)
- The second search result says that I and my Google Plus friend Bart Sintenie have given this page a +1.
- The first search result shows my author photo and the text “from Thomas Lapperre – in 152 Google+ circles“
The latter point is a so-called rich snippet. You increasingly see it in Google search results, such as when there is a video on the page. More clicks are made on search results with rich snippets. And you would like that if you are involved with SEO.
Google Authorship in Google Search
Linking your Google plus account to your blogs and the content you create is called Google Authorship. Read Daniel's piece about it Implement Google Plus Authorship, it explains that whole piece. The reasons Google itself gives to do this are:
- Through Google Webmaster Tools you can see how often your content is displayed in Google Search.
- Content with authorship is distinctive and validated.
- It generates more followers on Google+.
- It helps the readers to find your other content.
- It gives readers the opportunity to interact directly with the author.
Google Plus links in Google Search
All links that you post on Twitter and Facebook have no effect on the Google search results. (because of "nofollow"). A number of links on Google plus are "dofollow" and therefore generate "juice". These are the website link in your profile and the first link in a post. In addition, the interaction on Google plus also has consequences for the ranking of your Google plus profile. See the Google Plus Backlinking Cheat Sheet made by Daniël in collaboration with Alain Sadon of SEOguru.nl.
Note: creating fake accounts and placing links does not work; Google takes into consideration how active and therefore how relevant the links on your profile and posts are. It therefore also means that the text around the link in the post is important.
Google Posts in Google Search
Your Google Plus posts are also ranked in Google search. In the above case I searched for 'link building with images'. If you do not search in a personalized way, Google plus communities are displayed (just like Facebook communities and Twitter profiles) and Google plus posts are also displayed. See example below, with unpersonalized search on '' custom-designed pine dresser South Holland ':
The first search result is the post Made-to-measure pine sideboard in South Holland. Furniture maker Grenenhoeve indicates itself through Albert Niekamp: “You can also find the words in the headline of the Google + posting in the
Website and posting must support each other for a high ranking, rel = publisher is therefore a necessity to have on the website if you at least sell products. "
Google plus is ideal for SEO
In summary: purely as a social network, Facebook is doing better than Google plus: everyone is on Facebook. If you only look at the search engine optimization, you will see that communities, pluses, posts, links and authorship are shown in the search results and have an effect on the ranking.
