How do you improve the authority of a website?

The domain authority of your website, also called domain value, indicates how relevant and important the search engine finds your website. The influence of this SEO pillar should not be underestimated. The domain authority of your website is an important part of determining the rankings in Google search results. But how can you measure authority? And possibly increase it? In this article we explain how you can do this.
The authority of a page
Before you get started with SEO optimization, it is important to know that you have a page and domain authority. You can measure and improve these two authorities separately from each other.
With the page authority you don't look at the entire website, but only how the specific webpage scores. This can be, for example, a category or subcategory of the website. For the domain authority, you look at the website as a whole. Although you can measure and improve them separately from each other, they naturally also support each other. Page and domain authority can be measured on a scale of 0 – 100. The higher, the more valuable your website can be to the search engine.
Measuring domain and page authority
How can you measure the authority your website has? Then you can measure using different tools. Each tool measures the authority slightly differently and gives higher or lower scores. The tools you can use for this are:
- Moz .'s DA score
- Majestic .'s TF score
- The DR score of Ahrefs score
When you enter the url of the website or webpage, you immediately see how high you score on the authority. And as I mentioned earlier, the higher the score, the more valuable your website can be for the search engine. This then influences the position that Google ultimately assigns to your website. Did you get a low score or are you not satisfied? Then it is high time to improve this.
Make the website discoverable
To make your website more discoverable, you can start by increasing the authority at the page or domain level. An important factor in improving this is the number of inbound links to your website or page. The overview of these inbound links is also known as a backlink profile. You can easily find out the number of incoming links with the aforementioned tools. When you want to improve the backlink profile, it is important to pay attention to a number of things. For example, distributing the inbound links is important. It is sometimes better to get 10 good links in a month instead of 800 poor quality links. Too many poor quality links often come across as spam. Google can penalize you for this, which reduces the findability of your website. Therefore, pay attention to this and ensure a natural link building strategy.
In addition, it is also important to look at the relevance of an inbound link. For example, do you sell pans to cook with, but do you get a link on a website that sells shoes? Then this is of course irrelevant. Therefore, make sure that the backlink profile is 'logical'.
Improving on-page SEO
Besides collecting inbound links, there are other ways to improve the authority of your website. For example, by means of content you can make your website more user-friendly for the search engines. With this you can almost always take the website to a higher level.
In addition, it is also important to look at the speed of the website. For example, does your website load slowly? This also affects the findability. Finally, you can also look at the menu structure of the website. Is this put together logically so that the user can easily find his way around? If this is not the case, you can create a new layout for this.
