Lost in translation: Why you as a Dutchman can't get away with fast translations and need a translation agency

Days are days in Dutch. Whether you are three days spent in Amsterdam, or three unforgettable ones days have experienced the word remains the same. It is different in French, not the easiest language in the world. If you talk about time in three days, you write trois jours. If you want to display the experience and emotion of these days, you write trois journées.
Language is so subtle and not just the French language. Word choices, synonyms, sentence constructs and the meaning of words in their specific context - every language has rules, peculiarities and subtleties that influence a text. Small differences and just that one wrong word can mislead the reader. That can be hilarious, but also offensive. You avoid both with a serious translation agency.
Are language errors so bad? The other person does not know that it is not my 'mother tongue'? Bad or bad depends a lot on the purpose of a text. In a short e-mail, to a business relation you know, small imperfections do not cause damage quickly. With more serious international language traffic, business correspondence, contracts, legal documents, user instructions or a website for the international market, you can rely more on the language skills and care of a native speaker with a proven track record as a translator of business texts.
If I am asked whether I also want to write a text "briefly" in English, French or German, I consistently say no. I do my best in English and French - a little less in German - but not good enough to write a hundred percent guaranteed correct text, which the foreign-language reader experiences as perfect and authentic and does not give rise to any hilarity or misunderstanding. My 'no' is always accompanied by a referral to a translation agency where I know that professional texts are in good hands.
My argument? If you do business internationally, the first requirement is that you take your customers, relationships and their language and culture seriously. With the correct use of language, including characteristic subtleties, courtesies and concepts determined by culture, we show that we have immersed ourselves in the language of the other and we show respect. It is impossible for me to use the high quality standards that I set for my own writing style and skills if I write in a language that I do not know to the full one hundred percent and down to the most subtle finer points. You will find the required expertise and quality standards at a translation agency. Translation is a very serious profession. I am not afraid, because then my days would be counted quickly.
