SMEs and self-employed
Here you can read about SMEs, Dutch small and medium-sized enterprises, known in Belgium as SME, small-medium enterprises. A practical difference is that SMEs designate the sector, not a company. So you do not speak of an SME, but again of an SME. SMEs are the sector of companies that have up to 250 employees. Only 3% of the companies in the Netherlands are not SMEs. Self-employed stands for a sole proprietorship with only one person employed: “self-employed without staff”. Self-employed persons can, however, hire temporary workers and employees on the basis of zero-hours contracts.
